## What it is

Power10 is the tenth generation of IBM's server architecture. It is not x86, and the
PowerVM hypervisor is part of the platform rather than something installed on it. AIX,
IBM i and Linux run on it.

## What it is for

Applications that require the platform. That is the honest reason Power sits in a
datacentre: an ERP on IBM i, a database with a long history, a system that was never
ported.

As a general virtualization platform alongside an x86 estate it is the wrong choice. Two
platforms means two operating models.

## What to watch

The question is usually not a technical one. A Power environment runs for a long time
without drawing attention, which is exactly why the people who know it eventually retire.
Planning a refresh today means planning the succession alongside it.
